As Amahle Thabethe, a girl from Tsakane in Ekurhuleni, turns 14 in 2024, her family continues to grapple with the pain of her six-year absence. Despite the passage of time, her loved ones and local authorities remain committed to finding her, holding on to the hope that she will one day return home.
Amahle was reported missing in 2018, and her mother, Nokulunga Nkosi, reflects on the bittersweet nature of her daughter’s upcoming birthday. “This is a sensitive matter. Whenever we touch on the topic, it becomes very emotional,” Nkosi expressed, emphasizing the toll the situation has taken on the family. They have opted to communicate only with those closely involved in the search, especially during moments when there is potential for positive news.
In their efforts to locate Amahle, the One Strong Voice Foundation—a social justice advocacy nonprofit—has been at the forefront of the search. Brian Sithole, the foundation’s Chief Operating Officer and Director, noted the organization’s dedication to assisting in the ongoing search. Together with various groups within Tsakane, they have scoured hotspots where sightings were reported and organized marches to raise awareness for her safe return. Despite receiving numerous tips over the years, none have led to significant breakthroughs in the case.
Sithole highlighted the challenges faced by the family and volunteers. “We requested the South African Police Services (SAPS) to issue a R50,000 cash reward for information leading to her recovery, but this was only approved two years after Amahle disappeared,” he stated. He also mentioned that the case has seen a revolving door of investigative officers since the first one retired, complicating continuity in the investigation.
In addition to traditional search methods, community members and organizations have engaged in prayer sessions to foster a spirit of hope and resilience among those affected by Amahle’s disappearance. “It is disturbing when people joke or post fake news about missing children on social media while families like ours are dealing with the real pain of uncertainty,” Sithole lamented. He urged the public to treat such matters with the seriousness they deserve.
The One Strong Voice Foundation and its partners remain committed to keeping the search for Amahle alive. They have called for ongoing support from the community and law enforcement as they continue to advocate for her case. “The search for Thabethe will continue until she is found,” Sithole affirmed.
